1865 dates the end of the Civil war and drummers are experimenting with playing snare and bass drums simultaneously. Prior to 1865, drumming in American culture was designed to help soldiers march from one end of a field to another, or used in classical music. Post civil war, musicians are curious in playing the bass and snare drum simultaneously in a technique called double drumming.
