Post civil war, African Americans were allowed to contribute more to American society and American music. In 1890 ragtime emerges from African American banjo players and pianist giving music a syncopated feel that made people dance. Drummers start to improvise with this new sense of swing that is different from the traditional double drumming technique. Drummers also borrow instruments from other ethnicities due to a mass migration of immigrants flowing into America, like the Zildjian cymbal from Turkey. The average drumset now consist of a bass and snare drum and cymbal.
